Vyjack Updated Derby Odds
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - The 2013 Kentucky Derby is rapidly approaching and one of the sleeper contenders this year could be mid-range long shot Vyjack.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Vyjack is a 20/1 long shot to win tonight at Churchill Downs. Orb is the current favorite at 17/4 but Verrazano has similar odds at 17/4. Goldencents and Revoltuionary are both 7/1, while Itsmyluckyday is 10/1 and Overanalyze is 14/1.
Based on his recent race history, it's a little perplexing why Vyjack is a 20/1 long shot. He's coming off a third-place showing in the Grade I Wood Memorial on April 6, but he didn't lose a race prior to that date. He won the Grade III Gotham Stakes on March 2, the Grade II Jerome Handicap on January 5, and the Traskwood on December 9.
That said, his third-place finish in the Wood Memorial came against a field that include some Kentucky Derby contenders. Verrazano won the race, while Normandy Invasion came in second. In his wins, Vyjack didn't exactly face elite competition, which could explain his 20/1 odds.
Still, for a horse that hasn't finished out of the money in five career starts, 20/1 represents a ton of value today at the 2013 Kentucky Derby, which will start at 6:24PM ET (Post Time).
