California Chrome vs. Wicked Strong

2014 Kentucky Derby odds California Chrome Wicked Strong betting horse racing

CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - Will California Chrome beat out Wicked Strong in today's Kentucky Derby? The odds are in his favor.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, California Chrome is a -210 favorite to finish ahead of Wicked Strong in today's Kentucky Derby. Wicked Strong is a +170 underdog in this matchup, so for every $100 that you wager on Wicked Strong, you'd win +170 if he finishes ahead of California Chrome. That said, California Chrome is the favorite to win the Derby at 5/2, while Wicked Strong is currently 15/2.

California Chrome is in the midst of an impressive run. He's coming off a victory in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby and has picked up a victory in each of his last four races. His previous three wins prior to the Santa Anita Derby came in the Grade II San Felipe, the California Cup Derby and the King Glorious Stakes.

Wicked Strong, meanwhile, is coming off a win in the Grade I Wood Memorial, which is one of the main reasons why he and California Chrome have the best odds entering today's Derby. That said, he finished a disappointing ninth in the Grade II Holy Bull after placing third in the Grade II Remsen. Thus, he's a bit of a mystery heading into today's Derby. If you throw out the poor finish in the Holy Bull, there's no reason to think that he couldn't win at Churchill Downs. But it's hard to overlook the fact that that performance was such a dud.

If you're looking for our advice on this matchup, we like California Chrome but there's not much value in his -210 odds. There's a little too much risk in laying $210 to win $100 where there are arguably better values on the board, such as taking California Chrome at 5/2 to at least place today.

The 2014 Kentucky Derby will take place today at 6:24PM ET, which is the official post time.
