CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - Could Ride On Curlin be a nice underdog play to finish ahead of Intense Holiday in today's Kentucky Derby?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Intense Holiday is currently sitting as a -155 money line favorite over Ride On Curlin, who is +125 on the ML. This means that if you place a $155 wager on Intense Holiday, you'll win $100 if he finishes ahead of Ride On Curlin. If you place $100 on Ride On Curlin to finish ahead of Intense Holiday, you'll win $125.
Ride On Curlin has had an impressive run over his last couple of starts, even if he doesn't have a win in a graded stakes race thus far. He placed second in the Arkansas Derby behind Danza and also finished third in back-to-back races in the Rebel Stakes and Southwest Stakes. His lone wins came in an Allowance on January 12 and in a MSW on July 13.
Intense Holiday is coming off a second-place showing in the Louisiana Derby on March 29, finishing behind Vicar's In Trouble. He also won the Grade II Risen Star on February 22 and placed third in the Holy Bull on January 25. The other win on his career resume came in a MSW on August 31.
Our advice is to take the underdog and the +125 value on Ride On Curlin, who will be ridden by Calvin Borel in tonight's race. Borel has won three Kentucky Derby races since 2007 when he rode Street Sense to victory. He also won the 2009 Derby aboard Mine That Bird, who was a 50/1 long shot, and won on Super Saver a year later. The Derby has a tendency to be a jockey-driven race and why not take the value at +125?
The 2014 Kentucky Derby will take place tonight at 6:24PM ET, which is the official post time.
