2014 Kentucky Derby Preview
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - The 2014 Kentucky Derby is just a mere hours away and with that, let's preview today's race.
The Odds: According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, California Chrome remains the favorite to win at 5/2, while Wicked Strong has the next-best odds at 6/1. Danza is also 7/1, while Intense Holiday is 12/1 and Candy Boy is 14/1. Ride On Curlin, Dance With Fate, Wildcat Red and Samraat are all 16/1, respectively.
The Contenders: California Chrome is coming off a victory in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, finishing ahead of Hoppertunity (who was scratched from the Derby earlier this week due to soreness in his left foot) and Candy Boy. Danza, meanwhile, won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby ahead of Ride On Curlin and Bayern, while Wicked Strong won the Wood Memorial ahead of Samraat and Social Inclusion. Constitution, who won't particpate in today's Derby, won the Grade 1 Florida Derby, but Wildcat Red and General A Rod finished second and third, respectively.
Post Positions: Vicar's In Trouble drew the rail on Wednesday while Harry's Holiday will start in the No. 2 gate and Uncle Sigh will start in the No. 3 post. Danza will start fourth, California Chrome will start fifth and Samraat will start sixth. We Miss Artie drew the No. 7 post while Genral A Rod will start in the 8th gate and Vinceremos will start in the No. 9 post. Wildcat Red drew the No. 10 post while Dance With Fate will start in the No. 12 gate and Chitu will start in the No. 13 gate. Medal Count will start in the No. 14 post, Tapiture in No. 15, Intense Holiday in No. 16, Commanding Curve in No. 17, Candy Boy in No. 18 and Ride on Curlin in No. 19. Wicked Strong will come all the way from the far post at No. 20.
Post Position History: The No. 10 post position has had the best luck, producing six wins in 39 starts and with 33% of the horses finishing in the top 3. The next-best post position is No. 16, which has produced five winners in 37 starts and 22% of contenders finishing in the top 3. The No. 8, No. 5 and No. 3 post positions have all posted four winners in 39 starts, respectively, while the No. 15 post position has produced three winners in 39 starts. The No. 9, No. 14, No. 12 and No. 17 post positions have never produced a winner.
Jockey History: Joel Rosario won the 2013 Kentucky Derby atop Orb and will ride General A Rod today. Calvin Borel has been fantastic since 2007, winning three races over that stretch atop Street Sense, Mine That Bird and Super Saver. He'll ride Ride On Curlin today. Mario Gutierrez, John Velazquez, Kent Desormeaux, Edgar Prado and Mike Smith have all picked up wins in the Derby since 2005, and Rosie Napravnik winning 11 of her 29 starts at Churchill Downs (not all Derby starts).
