American Lion Update
Grade 3 winner American Lion is looking to build off a recent victory when he takes on the field at the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
Recent History:
American Lion took home a victory at the G3 Illinois Derby on April 3, which was his most recent race. He beat out fellow Kentucky Derby contender Backtalk with a winning time of 1:51.31.
American Lion was 15/1 when the opening odds for the Kentucky Derby 136 were released, but then went up to 22/1 when the post positions were drawn on Wednesday of this week. According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, American Lion is still a 22/1 long shot to win at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
American Lion will start at the No. 7 position, which has a fair amount of good history at the Kentucky Derby. Since 1900, the No. 7 post position has produced eight winners.
Outlook:
American Lion represents good value because he’s proven that he can race on dirt and has shown the ability to stalk the pace. Trainer Eoin Hartly has never won a Kentucky Derby, but his victory at the Illinois Derby is encouraging and he’s not a typical speedhorse. While he likes running out front, American Lion has shown signs that he can be held back for a late push. At 22/1, American Lion is a true sleeper.
