Upstart Kentucky Derby Preview
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) – Could 2015 Kentucky Derby contender Upstart be a sleeper at Churchill Downs this weekend?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Upstart is 20/1 to win the Kentucky Derby this Saturday while American Pharoah is the current favorite at 9/4. Dortmund, meanwhile, is 9/2 to win while Carpe Diem is 7/1 and both Materiality and Mubtaahij are 12/1, respectively.
While he hasn’t won all of his starts, Upstart has placed in the money in every one of his races to date. His most recent run came in the Florida Derby on March 28, where he finished second to Materiality. He also placed second behind Itsaknockout in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth.
His last victory came in the Grade 2 Holy Bull on January 24 while he also placed third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on November 1 of last year and won the Funny Cide on August 24. He also placed second at the Grade 1 Champagne on October 4.
