MELBOURNE, Australia (TheSpread) – The 2012 Australian Open is set to get started this weekend and there is plenty of competition on the women’s side.

Oddsmakers have listed Petra Kvitova as the favorite with 5/2 odds to win the tournament while other short odds to win are Serena Williams (7/2), Victoria Azarenka (7/1), and Kim Clijsters (7/1). The Australian Open takes place on a hard court surface from Melbourne.

Kvitova has won one grand slam in her career, the 2011 Wimbledon tournament. She has never gotten past the quarterfinals in the Australian Open and only made the finals of one grand slam in 14 appearances.

Williams has won the Australian Open five times in her career, including the 2010 and 2009 title. She was unable to play in last year’s tournament due to injury. Williams has won 13 grand slam titles in her career.

Azarenka has yet to win a grand slam title and she has never reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. Her peak performance came in 2011 Wimbledon, where she reached the semifinals.

Clijsters has won three grand slam events in her career, including the Australian Open in 2011. She also won the U.S. Open in 2010 and 2009. She didn’t play in the last two grand slam events.
