NEW YORK (AP) -Sean Avery’s suspension has been set at six games by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
The Dallas Stars forward already served two games since he was indefinitely banned Tuesday for making what the league said were “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game.”
Avery is one of the NHL’s most notorious enforcers. Bettman’s ruling was announced on the NHL Web site Friday, one day after a three-hour hearing was held at the league’s Manhattan office.
Avery used a crude expression in Calgary, Alberta, while speaking to reporters to describe former girlfriends now dating other hockey players. His comments appeared to be directed at Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating actress Elisha Cuthbert.
