Marian Hossa was in no rush to let another shot fly after Detroit opened with a few dozen unsuccessful attempts. His patience paid off.
Hossa faked Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller into going down early, then scored the go-ahead goal 1:48 into the third period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 victory over the Ducks on Monday night.
Detroit took 47 shots to Anaheim’s 16.
“Clears (Dan Cleary) had the puck and I just tried to wait for him, and I knew it was a matter of time when he was going to make the pass to me,” Hossa said. “Basically I just tried to shoot at the net and I think it surprised the goalie by the five-hole.”
Hossa threw Hiller off with the hesitation.
“I was expecting a one-timer and I was already down,” Hiller said.
It was Hossa’s 14th goal and the Red Wings’ second straight win in which he broke a third-period tie.
In other NHL games Monday, it was: Nashville 2, Buffalo 0; Columbus 3, Vancouver 2; Colorado 6, Minnesota 5 and Toronto 3, Los Angeles 1.
In Detroit, Johan Franzen also scored for the Red Wings and Chris Osgood made 15 saves.
n Anaheim’s first shot, when he stuffed the puck in from beside the net for his fifth goal. It was set up by Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart’s giveaway behind his own net.
The Red Wings gave up a goal on the opponent’s first shot for the second consecutive game.
Franzen tied it with 5:34 left in the second period – on Detroit’s 32nd shot of the game – when he tipped in Nicklas Lidstrom’s shot from the point past Jean-Sebastien Giguere for his 11th goal.
“It was good to get that first one past him,” Franzen said. “It usually takes a goal like that, a redirection, an ugly goal. He was playing real good.”
Giguere stopped 37 shots before being removed after two periods. He has a history of groin injuries and was beginning to cramp up.
“Decided after two periods that he had seen enough rubber for one game and not take a chance,” Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said.
Hiller made eight saves in the third period as Anaheim had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Predators 2, Sabres 0
At Buffalo, N.Y., Pekka Rinne made 30 saves for his first career shutout and Jason Arnott snapped a tie in the third period for Nashville.
J.P. Dumont also scored and had an assist for the Predators (12-10-2), who won for the third time in five games.
Ryan Miller made 25 saves for the Sabres (11-10-3).
Blue Jackets 3, Canucks 2
off a pass from Rick Nash with 4:44 left and the Blue Jackets got their first win this season after allowing the first goal.
Columbus came in 0-6-3 when the opponent scored first, becoming the last team in the NHL to win after falling behind 1-0.
Rookie Steve Mason improved to 6-2-1 in his first professional season, stopping 29 shots.
Fredrik Modin and Andrew Murray added goals for Columbus. Nash had two assists and Huselius also had an assist to go with his winner.
Avalanche 6, Wild 5
St. Paul, Minn., Paul Stastny had two goals and an assist, and the low-scoring Avalanche put up a season high for goals.
Marek Svatos, David Jones, T.J. Hensick and Milan Hejduk also scored for Colorado, which entered the game as the second lowest scoring team in the Western Conference.
Hejduk, Hensick and Stastny scored three straight goals in the second off Minnesota turnovers to give Colorado a 6-3 lead.
A bouncing puck off the stick of Wild forward Benoit Pouliot went in the net a few seconds after time expired in the third period, causing the Minnesota fans to groan in disbelief.
Maple Leafs 3, Kings 1
Los Angeles, Matt Stajan and Mikhail Grabovski scored power-play goals less than 1 1/2 minutes apart early in the third period and Vesa Toskala made 32 saves for Toronto.
fter Sean O’Donnell and captain Dustin Brown were called for staggered tripping penalties in the third.
Stajan tied the score with 17:51 to play during a goalmouth scramble while goaltender Jason LaBarbera was caught flatfooted and off-balance in the crease. The goal came with 3 seconds left on a two-man advantage, and Grabovski got the go-ahead goal on a perfect centering pass from John Mitchell with 29 seconds left on Brown’s penalty.
Defenseman Jeff Finger scored into an empty net with 10 seconds remaining.
