Bill Guerin had an easy time sizing up the new big, bad Bruins.
“They’ve got a scary combination. They’ve got size and talent,” Guerin said Friday after the Boston Bruins routed his New York Islanders 7-2. “A lot of their big guys have real good talent, too, to go along with it. You don’t see that a lot.”
Blake Wheeler and David Krejci set up each other for scores 10 seconds apart in Boston’s five-goal third period, Michael Ryder scored twice. Easily rebounding from a loss Wednesday night in Buffalo, the Bruins improved to 10-1-1 in November.
“They played great in the third, honestly,” said Guerin, the former Boston College star who has 396 goals in 17 NHL seasons.

“We put on a good show,” said Wheeler, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound rookie from the University of Minnesota. “Some people say we’re too defensively minded, but we can do that and move the puck down the ice. I think it’s a good recipe for us.”

The Bruins unveiled their black third jersey and took the ice to AC/DC’s song “Back in Black” for the first two periods. They also gave out black T-shirts.
Sharks 6, Stars 2
At Dallas, Dan Boyle scored two goals, Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves and NHL-leading San Jose won its sixth straight to improve to 19-3-1.
The Sharks played for the first time in Dallas since losing to the Stars in a four-overtime game last season in the Western Conference semifinals.
Joe Pavelski, Milan Michalek, Rob Blake and Tomas Plihal also scored for San Jose. Loui Eriksson and James Neal scored for Dallas.
Hurricanes 3, Flyers 2, OT
At Philadelphia, Sergei Samsonov scored for Carolina with 1:07 left to end the Hurricanes’ three-game losing streak and snap the Flyers’ winning streak at six.
Cam Ward made 24 saves, and Patrick Dwyer and Tuomo Ruutu added goals for Carolina. Joffrey Lupul and Carter each had a goal and an assist for Philadelphia.
Capitals 3, Canadiens 0

Theodore spent parts of 10 seasons with Montreal before being traded to Colorado in March 2006. In his only other start against the Canadiens, he allowed eight goals in a loss with Colorado on Oct. 21, 2006.
The victory was the Capitals’ seventh straight at home. Washington is 9-0-1 at home this season and 15-0-1 since March 9.
Sabres 4, Penguins 3
At Buffalo, N.Y., Paul Gaustad broke a tie with his second goal of the game, and Drew Stafford had two goals and an assist in Buffalo’s comeback victory.
Sidney Crosby scored twice, and Tyler Kennedy added a goal for Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin had two assists to boost his NHL-leading points total to 37, and John Curry made 28 saves in his first NHL start.
Rangers 4, Panthers 3, SO
At Sunrise, Fla., Markus Naslund and Nikolai Zherdev scored in a shootout, and Henrik Lundqvist made 38 saves for New York.
Lundqvist allowed Rostislav Olesz’s goal in the tiebreaker, then stopped the final two attempts to improve to 5-1 in shootouts this season.
Zherdev, Dan Fritsche and Aaron Voros scored in regulation for New York, and Radek Dvorak, Jay Bouwmeester and David Booth countered for Florida.
Red Wings 5, Blue Jackets 3
had a goal and assist for Detroit.
Jiri Hudler and Kris Draper also scored, and Chris Osgood made 13 saves. Fedor Tyutin scored twice for Columbus, and Jakub Voracek added a goal.
Predators 4, Thrashers 3, OT
At Atlanta, Ryan Suter beat Johan Hedberg on a breakaway 1:44 into overtime to give Nashville its first win in Atlanta since December 1999.
Dan Hamhuis and Scott Nichol each had a goal and an assist, and Jason Arnott scored his team-leading 11th goal for Nashville. Ilya Kovalchuk, Nathan Oystrick and Todd White scored for Atlanta.
Wild 4, Lightning 2
At St. Paul Minn., James Sheppard and Mikko Koivu scored early in the third period, both off assists from Marc-Andre Bergeron, in Minnesota’s first victory of the season when trailing after 40 minutes.
Owen Nolan and Eric Belanger added goals. Ryan Malone scored for Tampa Bay, 1-2-3 since Rick Tocchet took over as coach following Barry Melrose’s firing.
Ducks 1, Blackhawks 0
At Anaheim, Calif., Jonas Hiller made 26 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Ryan Getzlaf scored for Anaheim.
Hiller, 4-0 in his last six appearances, started in place of Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who left the Ducks on Tuesday because of a family matter in Montreal.
Coyotes 2, Avalanche 1
At Glendale, Ariz., Mikael Tellqvist made 37 saves, and Derek Morris and Kevin Porter scored for Phoenix. Ryan Smyth scored for Colorado.
