MONTREAL (AP) Montreal scored two late goals to beat the New York Islanders 4-2 on Sunday, re-establishing the Canadiens as the NHL Eastern Conference pace-setter.
The Canadiens moved two points above the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers.
In the day’s other games, New Jersey goaltender Cory Schneider repeatedly denied his former team and led the Devils over Vancouver, San Jose stretched its winning streak to six by beating Columbus, and Carolina ended a run of five straight defeats by edging Los Angeles.
The New York Islanders twice led against Montreal, after John Tavares scored the opening goal late in the third period, and when Anders Lee put the visitors up 2-1 with 8:07 left to play.
However Montreal rattled on three goals in those eight minutes, with Alex Galchenyuk putting the Canadiens ahead with 3:29 left and Max Pacioretty adding an empty-net goal.
David Desharnais and Tomas Fleischmann also netted for Montreal, which added to its 5-3 win over the Islanders two days earlier.
New Jersey’s Schneider made 36 saves to lead the Devils to a 3-2 win at Vancouver.
Schneider spent three seasons with the Canucks before being traded to New Jersey at the 2013 draft as the first casualty of the protracted goaltending controversy involving himself and Roberto Luongo – Luongo was also traded, going to Florida.
Mike Cammalleri had a goal and two assists, while Andy Greene and Adam Henrique also scored for the Devils.
Henrik Sedin and Radim Vrbata scored for Vancouver.
San Jose’s Joe Pavelski scored twice as the Sharks rallied late for a 5-3 win over Columbus; their seventh straight road win.
Carolina’s Justin Faulk scored two power-play goals for the Hurricanes, which started strongly and held on to edge Los Angeles 4-3.
