PITTSBURGH (AP) The New York Rangers rallied from an early two-goal deficit to win 5-2 at Pittsburgh on Monday, opening a four-point gap on the Penguins in the fight for top spot in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division.
The teams play again Wednesday at Madison Square Garden to complete a pivotal, early season clash.
Chicago missed a chance to boost its lead in the Central Division after suffering a one-sided defeat at Edmonton, while Tampa Bay remained five points off the lead in the Atlantic Division following a loss at Nashville.
Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel scored twice in the first period of his first NHL game, but the Rangers responded in the second period as Rick Nash and Michael Grabner made it 2-2 before J.T. Miller, a Pittsburgh native, put the visitors ahead by scoring short-handed.
Kevin Hayes padded the lead midway through the third, and Derek Stepan also scored into an empty net.
Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl scored twice in a 5-0 rout of Chicago.
Cam Talbot made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season, while Oscar Klefbom, Andrej Sekera and Anton Slepyshev also scored for the Oilers.
Nashville’s P.K. Subban scored twice in the second period, helping the Predators beat Tampa Bay 3-1.
Pekka Rinne made 23 saves and Viktor Arvidsson also scored for the Predators.
Tyler Johnson scored for the Lightning, who suffered their first defeat on the last stop of a five-game trip.
San Jose’s Martin Jones made 26 saves in a shutout as the Sharks cruised past New Jersey 4-0.
Chris Tierney and Patrick Marleau each scored early and Logan Couture and Brent Burns also netted for the Sharks.
The Devils lost all three games of their California trip.
