TORONTO (AP) – The NHL says it hasn’t reached an agreement with the players’ union about salary-cap relief for the Los Angeles Kings stemming from Slava Voynov’s legal situation.
The defenseman was accused of domestic violence and arrested Oct. 20. He has been suspended with pay since and has not been charged. He is due in court Dec. 1, and the Los Angeles district attorney has until then to file charges.
During his suspension, $4.17 million is counted against the Kings’ salary cap. Los Angeles has twice had to play with 17 skaters instead of 18 because of cap problems.
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly calls the case ”unique” because the league usually doesn’t ”suspend with pay.” Speaking at the Prime Time Sports Management Conference, Daly says the matter is ”somewhat uncertain” and adds: ”We’re kind of playing it day by day.”
