WASHINGTON (AP) -Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo extended his winning streak against Washington to 10 games, making 26 saves in the Canucks' 3-2 victory over the Capitals on Friday night.
Luongo is 7-0-3 with two shutouts in his last 10 starts against Washington, a run of dominance that dates to the 2003-04 season and includes when he was with Florida.
Taylor Pyatt scored twice, and Daniel Sedin scored for Vancouver, which snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 4-2 on the road.
It wasn't easy, though, because Alex Ovechkin scored on a power play with about 1 1/2 minutes left to draw Washington within a goal, and then another penalty gave the Capitals a man-advantage for the final 77 seconds. But Luongo was up to the task, making a close-range save on Michael Nylander in the closing seconds.
Ovechkin also had an assist on Nylander's goal in the first period.
Sabres 4, Panthers 2
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Drew Stafford's fluke goal with 8:48 left in the third period snapped a tie and helped Buffalo end a three-game losing streak.
Stafford scored when his wrist shot bounced off goalie Tomas Vokoun's blocker high into the air, then fell in behind Vokoun. Buffalo's Daniel Paille looked as though he might have tipped the puck, but the goal was awarded after video review.
Ales Kotalik, Jochen Hecht and Paille also scored for the Sabres, and Ryan Miller stopped 33 shots, including a big pad save on a tip-in by Olli Jokinen with a little over 5 minutes left. Jozef Stumpel and Ville Peltonen scored for the Panthers.
Red Wings 5, Sharks 1
DETROIT (AP) - Valtteri Filppula scored his first goal of the season and also had an assist, and Tomas Holmstrom added a goal and an assist for Detroit.
Henrik Zetterberg scored and has a point in all 11 games this season, and Andreas Lilja and Kirk Maltby also scored in Detroit's fourth straight victory. Chris Osgood made 10 saves, allowing only Alexei Semenov's late power-play goal.
Canadiens 7, Hurricanes 4
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Tomas Plekanec had two goals and two assists to help Montreal win its third straight game.
Montreal scored four of its five power-play goals in the first period. The Canadiens have scored eight of their NHL-best 16 power-play goals in two games in Carolina, both wins.
Alex Kovalev, Mark Streit, Kyle Chipchura, Saku Koivu and Mathieu Dandenault also scored for the Canadiens. Eric Staal scored on a penalty shot, and Jeff Hamilton, Ray Whitney and Rod Brind'Amour added goals for Carolina.
Avalanche 3, Flames 2, OT
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Ryan Smyth scored 23 seconds into overtime for Colorado.
Marek Svatos tied it at 2 with 4:15 left in regulation, and Jose Theodore made 39 saves for the victory. Joe Sakic also scored for Colorado.
Alex Tanguay and Matthew Lombardi scored for Calgary.
