TORONTO (AP) - Allan Stanley, a Hall of Fame defenseman who won four Stanley Cups with the Toronto Maple Leafs during a 22-year NHL career, has died. He was 87.
The NHL confirmed his death on its website.
Stanley started with the New York Rangers in the 1948-49 season and was traded to Chicago during the 1954-55 season. He played in Boston before landing in Toronto before the 1958-59 season.
During his 10 seasons with the Leafs, Stanley formed a fierce defensive tandem with Tim Horton. Among his four Stanley Cups was one in 1967, Toronto's last title. He finished his career with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1968-69. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
Stanley was born in Timmins, Ontario. Nicknamed ''Snowshoes'' for his ponderous skating style, Stanley had 100 goals, 333 assists and 792 penalty minutes over 1,244 regular-season NHL games.
