-Evgeni Malkin, Penguins, scored in the second extra round of the shootout to lift Pittsburgh to a 2-1 win over Boston.
-Mike Modano, Stars, scored in the third period to snap a tie and help slumping Dallas beat the New York Rangers, 2-1.
-Ryan Smyth, Avalanche, had two goals to lead Colorado over Los Angeles, 4-3.
The Rangers were 50-20-16 with Sean Avery in the lineup and 9-13-2 when he didn't play. ... Panthers winger Radek Dvorak played his 900th career game. ... Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby has a three-game point streak with a goal and six assists. ... Colorado has allowed at least one power play goal in each of its first six games, and has given up eight in 27 short-handed situations altogether.
Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery didn't do much on the scoresheet in his return to New York to face the Rangers. However he did promise to take his temmates out to dinner after the Stars 2-1 victory. ``It was good motivation for us all,'' Stars captain Brenden Morrow said of the impending victory meal. ``He's making friends.''
Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist faced twin brother Joel, a Dallas center, for the third time in the NHL. Their older sister, Gabriella, was in attendance of the Stars' 2-1 victory.
