UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -Veteran forward Doug Weight has been named captain of the New York Islanders.
The Islanders announced on Friday that the 38-year-old four-time All-Star had been selected as the 12th captain in the franchise’s 37-year history.
He had 38 points (10 goals, 28 assists) in 53 games last season. He was also an assistant captain at times during his first year with the Islanders.
Weight has 1,007 points (275-732) in 1,184 regular-season games over 18 NHL seasons. He has also played for the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes.
The Islanders selected Kyle Okposo, Richard Park, Mark Streit and Brendan Witt as assistant captains.
