LOS ANGELES (AP) -The Los Angeles Kings have added former Boston and Detroit head coach Dave Lewis to their coaching staff.
The 54-year-old Lewis has served as a head coach or assistant coach in the NHL for the past two decades. He earlier played 15 seasons in the league, including three with the Kings from 1979-83.
The Bruins ousted him as coach in June, after they finished 35-41-6 and faded down the stretch by going 1-10-1 in their final 12 games.
Also on Tuesday, the Kings promoted Jamie Kompon to assistant coach and director of amateur development, and signed goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin to a one-year contract.
Lewis previously was the Red Wings coach in 2002-04 after working on their staff from 1988-02. As head coach, he guided Detroit to a pair of 48-win and 100-plus point seasons and two Central Division titles. He worked as a scout for the team in 2005-06.
His career record as a head coach in 131-82-33 (21 ties).
Lewis was an NHL defenseman from 1973-88, and was Los Angeles' captain from 1981-83. He played in his 1,000th career game on April 1, 1987, while with Detroit. He retired on Nov. 6 of that year and joined the Red Wings' coaching staff.
The 30-year-old Aubin appeared in 20 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, posting a 3-5-2 record and 3.34 goals-against average. He has played in 199 NHL games combined for Toronto and Pittsburgh, with a record of 75-77-15, a 2.91 goals-against average, and a .901 save percentage.
