ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -The Minnesota Wild signed free agent center Serge Payer to a one-year contract on Monday.
Payer spent most of last season in the minors with Birmingham of the AHL. The 6-foot, 191-pound Payer played in five NHL games with the Ottawa Senators.
Originally signed by Florida in 1997, the 28-year-old Payer played in 71 games for the Panthers in the 2005-06 season.
The Ontario native essentially replaces center Wyatt Smith, who signed with the Colorado Avalanche.
