UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -John Tavares has signed a three-year entry level contract with the New York Islanders, who took the 19-year-old standout first overall in last month’s NHL draft.
Tavares had 215 goals and 218 assists in four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, his goal total breaking the 33-year-old record held by Peter Lee. He was selected the 2007 Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record for goals in a season with 72.
Tavares led the OHL with 58 goals and 104 points last season, splitting time between the Oshawa Generals and London Knights.
He’s the fourth No. 1 overall pick for the Islanders.
