ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -The Washington Capitals have found a possible second-line center for next season, signing free agent Brendan Morrison to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Friday.
Morrison, who turns 34 next month, has played 12 seasons with Dallas, Anaheim, Vancouver and New Jersey. He was waived by the Ducks in March, claimed the next day by the Stars, and finished the season with 16 goals and 15 assists in 81 games between the two teams.
The Capitals have been in the market for a second-line center since the departure of Sergei Fedorov at the end of the season. Last week, the team addressed its need for a scoring winger by adding Mike Knuble for $5.6 million over two years.
Morrison has 175 goals and 330 assists in 755 career games, with career highs in goals (25) and assists (46) in 2002-03 with the Canucks. He played in 542 consecutive games from 2000-07, but wrist and knee injuries limited him to 39 games in the 2007-08 season.
