BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Sabres general manager Tim Murray intends to take a modest approach in free agency, targeting veteran role players to augment the team’s young roster.
That makes former Sabres captain Steve Ott a candidate to return to Buffalo once the NHL’s signing period opens Tuesday. And it was partly the reason behind the Sabres’ decision to buy out the remaining seven years of defenseman Christian Ehrhoff’s contract.
Murray says Monday that Ott is on his list of free-agent candidates, and added he’s had preliminary discussions with the player’s agent. Ott was traded by Buffalo in February as part of the deal that sent goalie Ryan Miller to St. Louis.
As for Ehrhoff, Murray said the defenseman was expendable because he wasn’t interested in being part of Buffalo’s rebuilding plan.
