COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A battle is brewing between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anheuser-Busch over a proposed tax increase.
The team owners want to tax beer, wine and cigarettes locally to underwrite a county takeover of the arena where they play.
The brewer’s president flew to Columbus on Thursday for meetings with Gov. Ted Strickland and legislators. The team wants the proposal inserted into the budget that starts July 1.
A tax would defy local voters who repeatedly rejected public financing of the arena, built by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.
