OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – The Ottawa Senators say the public response has been ”very good” to help find a liver donor for team owner Eugene Melnyk.
The 55-year-old Melnyk is in urgent need of a liver transplant. Senators President Cyril Leeder says his condition is now critical.
In a statement Friday, the team says more than 1,000 calls have been received and many applications were sent to the donor transplant team in Toronto.
Melnyk was admitted to a hospital three weeks ago due to ”liver-related complications.”
His family has reached out to close friends and relatives with the hope of finding a suitable donor candidate, but with no success.
The team says Melnyk has been sick since mid-January. He’s been absent from the Senators’ surprising playoff run.
