NEW YORK (AP) -Detroit center Pavel Datsyuk, Buffalo right wing Jason Pominville and Tampa Bay right wing Martin St. Louis are finalists for the Lady Byng Trophy given to the NHL player who best combines sportsmanship with playing ability.
Datsyuk won the Lady Byng in 2006 and 2007, and could become the first player to win it three times in a row since the New York Rangers’ Frank Boucher captured the award from 1933-35. Boucher won the award seven times in eight seasons.
Datsyuk finished fourth in league in scoring with a career-high 97 points (31 goals, 66 assists) in 82 games, and led all NHL players with a plus-41 rating.
Pominville, who completed his second full season in the league, finished with 80 points (27 goals, 53 assists) for the Sabres. St. Louis is a finalist for the third time after scoring 83 points (25 goals, 58 assists) for the Lightning.
Members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association submitted ballots for the award at the conclusion of the regular season.
The winner will be announced at the league’s awards show on June 12 in Toronto.
