BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) -The wife of hockey great Gordie Howe is being remembered as a resilient woman who became one of the first female sports agents.
Hundreds of mourners gathered Wednesday to pay respects to Colleen Howe. A memorial service for the woman known as “Mrs. Hockey” was held in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills.
Her son, Murray, said his mother urged her husband to come out of retirement at age 45 and play on the same team with his sons. He added that her motto was, “Why not?”
Colleen Howe died Friday at 76 after battling Pick’s disease, a rare form of dementia similar to Alzheimer’s.
