TORONTO (AP) -Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala underwent season-ending hip surgery on Monday to repair a torn labrum and is expected to have a rehabilitation time of 12 weeks.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo., the same surgeon who operated on New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez this week.
The Maple Leafs, who are not in playoff contention, will finish the season with backup goalie Curtis Joseph and waiver pickup Martin Gerber sharing the starting duties down the stretch.
Toronto also announced Monday that defenseman Mike Van Ryn will miss the rest of the season because of a torn knee ligament. Van Ryn injured the medial collateral ligament tear in his left knee during the first period against Edmonton on Saturday. He won’t need surgery and should be healed in 10 weeks.
Van Ryn played only 27 games this season because of various injuries, including two concussions.
Fellow defenseman Jonas Frogren, also injured in the first period against Edmonton, sprained a medial collateral knee ligament and will not play again this season.
