RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason left Tuesday night’s game against New Jersey in the first period with a head injury.
The Hurricanes said Gleason wouldn’t return, but the severity of the injury was not immediately known.
New Jersey center Michael Rupp delivered a hard check to Gleason in one corner of the Devils’ attacking zone with 12:53 left in the period, and Gleason appeared to hit the boards face-first.
Gleason fell to the ice and later was helped to the bench by teammates Erik Cole and Glen Wesley because he seemed to have trouble skating.
Rupp was issued a 5-minute penalty for boarding, and later in the period fought Carolina enforcer Wade Brookbank.
