CHICAGO (AP) Dallas’ Patrick Eaves scored a first-period hat trick to set up the Stars’ 4-2 win at Chicago on Thursday, slicing the gap between the top two teams in the NHL Central Division to a single point.
The Stars quickly avenged a 5-1 home defeat by the Blackhawks last weekend and are well poised to leapfrog the reigning Stanley Cup champions, as Dallas has three games in hand.
Among other key results, Eastern Conference pacesetter Washington won at Minnesota thanks to an Alex Ovechkin hat trick, and the New York Islanders started with a scoring burst and beat Los Angeles.
Dallas’ Eaves notched his second career hat trick and helped the Stars to a fifth win in six games. John Klingberg added a goal and an assist for Dallas.
Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane scored for the Blackhawks, who were without forward Artemi Panarin for the second straight game due to illness.
Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored three times in the second period for his 14th career hat trick, helping the Capital edge Minnesota 4-3.
Ovechkin, who leads the league with 34 goals, has 13 in his past 13 games. Nicklas Backstrom had three assists and Jason Chimera added an empty-netter for Washington, which improved to a league-best 20-5-2 on the road.
The Capitals won their fifth consecutive game and became the first team to reach 40 victories this season.
Charlie Coyle, Ryan Suter and Mikael Granlund scored for the Wild, but Minnesota lost for the 12th time in its past 13 games, including seven in a row at home.
The New York Islanders scored three times inside the first 14 minutes to set up a 5-2 win against Los Angeles.
John Tavares had a goal and an assist, Johnny Boychuk, Casey Cizikas and Anders Lee all scored in the first period and Travis Hamonic added an empty-netter in the third to help the Islanders win their third straight overall and third in a row at home.
Kyle Clifford and Milan Lucic scored for the Pacific Division-leading Kings, who had won their previous three home games.
Colorado snapped a four-game skid with a 4-3 win at Ottawa.
Jarome Iginla had two goals and an assist to reach 15 goals in a season for the 17th time. Blake Comeau had a goal and an assist and Nathan McKinnon also netted for the Avalanche.
Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and Chris Neil had goals for Ottawa.
Boston extended it run of away wins to five with a 6-2 victory at Winnipeg, led by two goals from Patrice Bergeron.
Brett Connolly had three assists, Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists, Loui Eriksson and Jimmy Hayes each had a goal and an assist, and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins.
Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers netted for Winnipeg.
Calgary scored four goals in the first period but was still forced to a shootout, when Juri Hudler scored to deliver a 6-5 win against San Jose.
Columbus’ Alexander Wennberg and Cam Atkinson each scored in the shootout to give the Blue Jackets a 4-3 victory over Anaheim.
Philadelphia’s R.J. Umberger snapped a 50-game scoreless drought and Wayne Simmonds got his 20th goal of the season to help the Flyers win 5-1 and send Buffalo to a fourth straight loss.
Edmonton’s Connor McDavid had two goals and three assists while Jordan Eberle scored three times and added an assist as the Oilers defeated Toronto 5-2.
