The Winnipeg Jets have announced they’ve signed defenseman Dustin Byfuglien to a $38 million, five-year extension.
Byfuglien was set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer and would’ve been one of the hottest commodities ahead of the NHL’s Feb. 29 trade deadline.
Instead, the 30-year-old will be part of the young Jets’ long-term future. Byfuglien has 15 goals and 17 assists this season and remains a two-way force at 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds.
Byfuglien leads the Jets in ice time at 24:14 a game. In 649 career NHL games, he has 148 goals and 228 assists.
There is still another free agent commanding the Jets’ attention, captain Andrew Ladd. The 30-year-old winger is also looking for a long-term deal to stay.
The Jets play at St. Louis Monday night.
