CHEVY CHASE, Md. (AP) -Reigning league MVP Alex Ovechkin and injured defenseman Tom Poti both participated in 3-on-3 scrimmages that the Washington Capitals held at an outdoor rink Thursday night.
Ovechkin – who crashed shoulder-first into the boards in Washington’s most recent game – and Poti – sidelined since Dec. 20 – are expected to play Saturday at home against the defending champion Detroit Red Wings.
Ovechkin, leading the NHL with 31 goals, sat out practice Wednesday to get some rest, coach Bruce Boudreau said, and not because he was feeling any effects from his “stinger” during Tuesday night’s loss at Boston.
Poti has missed the Southeast Division-leading Capitals’ past 15 games with a groin injury.
