Buffalo Sabres Fall Short of NHL Record

Team Page: Buffalo :: Atlanta
Goalie Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres were finally reminded how disappointing losing can feel.

Then again, it's been a while.

Vyacheslav Kozlov scored the lone shootout goal and the upstart Atlanta Thrashers put an end to the Sabres' bid for an NHL record start with a 5-4 victory Saturday night. The loss ended Buffalo's season-opening winning streak at 10, the Sabres having to settle for sharing the league record for best start to a season set by Toronto in 1993.

``I haven't felt like this in a while. I'm a little ticked off,'' Miller said. ``It would have been fun to be on our own, a little piece of history. ... Every night's not going to go your way.''

Alex Ovechkin was 15 years old and had yet to play professional hockey when the Washington Capitals last beat the Vancouver Canucks.

Now, the star forward is the centerpiece of a Capitals team that will try to defeat the Canucks for the first time in over 5 1/2 years when they meet at GM Place on Friday.

Vancouver (6-4-1) has won three straight and six of its last eight meetings with Washington (3-2-3), but this will be the teams' first matchup since a 6-1 road victory by the Canucks on Jan. 31, 2004.

NHL Scoreboard :: NHL Standings
The Buffalo Sabres are making their historic start look easy.

Maxim Afinogenov pumped in a goal and assist, Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots, and the perfect Sabres beat the New York Islanders 3-0 Thursday night to win their 10th straight game and match the best start the NHL has ever seen.

Afinoogenov set up Ales Kotalik's first-period goal and scored one in the second. Miller did the rest for the Sabres, who tied the 1993-94 Toronto Maple Leafs - the only other NHL team to jump out 10-0.
