The New Jersey Devils may have rugged defenseman Colin White back for the second round of the playoffs against the Ottawa Senators. The concern now is Devils captain Patrik Elias.

Elias missed his second straight practice with a cold Wednesday, sparking concern that the left wing on the Devils' top line might not be available for Game 1 in New Jersey on Thursday night. Elias saw a team doctor and was told to remain at home and away from the team.

When the Canucks closed out their opening series with a Game 7 victory, Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke fired off a message to Vancouver counterpart Dave Nonis.

``I sent Dave an e-mail after they won last night, congratulating him,'' Burke said Tuesday. ``My last year there, we won a divisional title. Dave was a huge part of that.

It didn't take long for Tom Renney's views about the Sabres not being the ``cream of the crop'' to reach Buffalo's locker room Tuesday.

Whatever the New York Rangers coach's intentions were in making that comment a day earlier, the top-seeded and President's Trophy-winning Sabres made sure they interpreted it in the worst possible light.

Canucks on Their Heels

Marty Turco and the Dallas Stars are one win from making - and perhaps more importantly, erasing - some franchise history.

A win in Game 7 on Monday night in Vancouver would make it the first time in 13 attempts a Stars team came back from a 3-1 playoff deficit. They've given themselves the chance by eliminating the problems of past playoff failures.

Wings Need One More

The home team has won each game in the Western Conference quarterfinal series between the Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames, who need that trend to continue if they want to force a deciding seventh game.

The Red Wings, meanwhile, will advance to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2004 with a win over the Flames in Game 6 on Sunday night at Pengrowth Saddledome.
