Staal wins it in OT
Carolina manufactured the game-winning goal Friday night at New York 4:04 into the first overtime to pick up a 1-0 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Jordan Staal scored his fourth goal of the season with the winning goal off assists from Nino Niederreiter and Brett Pesce. The Hurricanes had 32 shots in the winning effort with Niederreiter and Justin Faulk leading the way with fourt shots apiece. Petr Mrazek was stellar between the pipes as he stopped all 31 shots sent his way.
Islanders shut out in Game 1
After sweeping Pittsburgh in round one, New York fell 1-0 in overtime in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Friday night at home versus Carolina. After it went through regulation scoreless, the Hurricanes scored the game-winner at the 15:56 mark of overtime. The Islanders recorded 31 shots on goal in the losing effort with Josh Bailey leading the way with five shots. Robin Lehner was the tough-luck loser in net as he saved 31 out of 32 shots in the defeat.
NHL Betting Trends
Carolina
The Hurricanes are 36-17 in their last 53 games overall. Carolina is 2-6 in its last eight games as an underdog.
New York
The home team is 1-6 in the last seven meetings. The favorite is 7-19 in the last 26 meetings.
Prediction:
This will likely be a back-and-forth series and I expect the Islanders to get on the board a few times here as Mrazek has the reputation of an up-and-down goaltender. New York has an elite defense, so as long as the hosts can put three goals on the board or maybe even just two it will be in great shape. Go with the Islanders this afternoon to even the series up.
