The Rangers were the top team in the Eastern Conference last season, racking up 109 points to earn the No. 1 seed in the East. The Rangers reached the Eastern Conference Finals before losing in 6 games to the New Jersey Devils.

The Penguins finished fourth in the East, but was just one point shy of the Rangers. Their 108 points was the second-most in the Eastern Conference. Despite that, the Penguins were upset in the first round of the playoffs by the Philadelphia Flyers in 6 games.

The Kings were actually the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, but managed to dominate their way through the playoffs. Los Angeles went 16-4 throughout the entire playoffs to win the Stanley Cup over the New Jersey Devils in the end.
