ST. LOUIS (AP) -Rams defensive tackle La’Roi Glover will play in his 191st consecutive game this week against Atlanta.
It could also be his last.
That game will complete 13 accomplished seasons in the league for Glover. He isn’t ready to call it a career quite yet but says he will sit down with his family after the season and make a decision.
“Quite honestly, I have no idea what’s happening, where it’s going,” Glover said. “I have always said let me get the season over with, visit with my family and then we’ll make a decision.”
Glover’s decision on returning could be made for him, according to his wishes. He signed a three-year contract with the Rams in 2006, a pact that expires at the end of the season.
When asked whether he would consider playing beyond the 2008 season in another uniform, Glover said ‘It will be here or nothing.’
For their part, the Rams are set to begin a major rebuilding that likely would close the door on a possible Glover return.
ver has just a half of a sack in the first 15 games of this season.
Glover will have surgery on the knee as soon as the season ends and was given a day of rest during Tuesday’s practice.
Rams coach Jim Haslett expects Glover to play and keep the streak alive.
“The guy is a true professional,” Haslett said. “He is probably one of the best pass rushing inside guys that has ever played in the National Football League. He’s the hardest working guy I have been around. You can’t say enough about him.”
Aside from the team’s 2-13 record, Glover says he is most disappointed in his inability to play what he calls winning football on a personal basis.
“Once again, no excuses,” Glover said. “I’m not a big excuse guy. I don’t want to make excuses for it. It’s just not winning football individually.”
If Sunday does signal Glover’s curtain call, he will leave as one of the most accomplished defensive tackles in league history. In stints in Oakland, New Orleans, Dallas and St. Louis, he has racked up 83 sacks.
Those sacks place him fifth among active players and first among players at his position.
Considering the Rams and Glover’s lack of success, Glover acknowledges it would be difficult to leave on these terms. But he also knows not everyone can go out on top.
in a certain way; you don’t have to leave a certain way. I talked to a guy who was retired yesterday about trying to go out like a (Michael) Strahan or Jerome Bettis. You name two guys but I can name a million other guys. Franco Harris went out as a Seattle Seahawk, examples like that. You don’t always get to choose how you come in or how you go out.”
