ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd’s sensational rookie season is over.
Byrd, who leads the NFL with nine interceptions, has been placed on injured reserve by the Bills. He has been bothered by a groin injury related to surgery he had to repair a sports hernia last summer.
The Bills (5-9) announced the move on Wednesday as they prepare to play at Atlanta (7-7) this weekend.
Byrd, a second-round draft pick out of Oregon, set the franchise single-season rookie record for interceptions. Byrd also became the NFL’s first player since Dave Baker in 1960 to have two or more interceptions in three consecutive games.
The Bills also signed linebacker Josh Stamer, who returns to Buffalo after being released by Cleveland last month.
