For the second time this season, Aaron Rodgers is recovering from a concussion after a Green Bay loss.
The Packers lost their quarterback late in the second quarter Sunday against Detroit, shortly after Rodgers was hit on back-to-back plays. He was slow getting up after being hit by Amari Spievey and Landon Johnson at the end of an 18-yard scramble. Green Bay took a timeout, then Rodgers was sacked on the next play.
Rodgers stayed in for the rest of the drive before being replaced by Matt Flynn. Detroit went on to win 7-3.
“He was a little groggy after those two plays, and the medical staff and Aaron decided it was in his best interest not to go back in,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “That’s not my call, and I don’t know any specifics.”
Rodgers was not made available to reporters afterward, and he was not in the locker room when it was open to the media, so his status for next weekend’s game at New England is unclear.
Rodgers also had a concussion in an overtime loss at Washington in October. He played the following week. He hasn’t missed a game since taking over as Green Bay’s starter in 2008.
Also in the game, Lions linebacker Landon Johnson was carted off the field and taken to the hospital with a neck injury.
Johnson’s helmet appeared to strike the shoulder of Packers wide receiver Andrew Quarless, and the Detroit player remained down on his stomach for a while before being able to roll over onto his back. After a few minutes, the cart was brought out on the field.
Coach Jim Schwartz said afterward Johnson was at the hospital, but the team was “guardedly optimistic” about his condition.
Seattle Seahawks receiver Deon Butler broke his right leg in the closing minutes a 40-21 loss at San Francisco after being hit while scoring a touchdown.
Butler was injured moments after he caught a 2-yard TD pass from Matt Hasselbeck, hit from each direction by defenders. He was carted off the field wearing a vacuum splint.
Medical personnel placed a vacuum splint on Butler’s lower leg before taking him for an X-ray. He was quickly transported to Stanford Hospital, where he could spend a few days.
Bills receiver Lee Evans is out indefinitely – and could miss the final three games of the season – after hurting his ankle in a 13-6 win over the Cleveland Browns.
“Not good,” coach Chan Gailey said following the game, without divulging the nature of the injury or what ankle Evans had hurt. Gailey said Evans will miss at least Buffalo’s game at Miami next weekend.
Philadelphia middle linebacker Stewart Bradley is out of the Eagles game after dislocating his right elbow against the Dallas Cowboys.
Bradley was hurt early in the second quarter. He stayed down on the ground at the end of a play when another defender hit Dallas quarterback Jon Kitna on a third-down incompletion.
Tampa Bay first-round draft pick Gerald McCoy is out for the season with a right biceps injury after getting injured in the first quarter of Tampa Bay’s 17-16 victory over the Washington Redskins.
Linebacker Quincy Black broke his forearm in the second half, and Bucs coach Raheem Morris said Black is “potentially” out for the season.
New York Jets right tackle Damien Woody left the game against the Miami Dolphins with a knee injury and did not return. Woody was replaced during the first quarter by Wayne Hunter.
Saints officials said kickoff returner Courtney Roby has feeling in his extremities and was alert while taken from the field on a stretcher with an apparent upper body injury against St. Louis.
Roby appeared to be moving his arms and talking while paramedics attended to him. The Saints said he’s been taken to a hospital for observation.
