FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) – New York Jets safety James Ihedigbo is having an MRI exam on his knee and sprained ankle, and coach Rex Ryan says the team will have to cut Laveranues Coles to make roster room for a healthy safety.
Ihedigbo, a backup on defense who is a prominent player on special teams, was injured in the third quarter of New York’s 45-3 loss at New England on Monday night.
Ryan says the fact Ihedigbo didn’t finish the game is a bad sign, but he was unsure of his status. He added that the Jets will look to sign another safety with Ihedigbo injured and Jim Leonhard out for the season with a broken right shin. They currently have two healthy safeties.
Coles, inactive Monday night, was signed Sunday to his fourth stint with the team.
