BALTIMORE (AP) -Ed Reed had a hand in two first-half touchdowns and Matt Stover kicked a 32-yard field goal, giving the Baltimore Ravens a 17-0 lead over the Washington Redskins after three quarters Sunday night.
Reed set up one touchdown with an interception, then stripped Washington’s Clinton Portis and returned his fumble 22 yards for another score. Both turnovers came in the first quarter.
ce converted on third down and Joe Flacco threw a 24-yard, cross-field pass to tight end Todd Heap on a fourth-and-1 misdirection play.
But Flacco was intercepted by LaRon Landry near the end of the third quarter on a third-and-13 attempt, and the Redskins ended the period driving at the Baltimore 17.
Shaun Suisham missed a 48-yard field goal with 11:35 remaining in the second quarter, the Redskins’ best chance at points in a dismal first half. Of Washington’s eight first-half series, five ended with punts and two were halted by Reed’s takeaways.
The game marked the first regular-season visit to Baltimore by the Redskins since 1978, when they lost to the Colts at Memorial Stadium. The teams have played three times since the Cleveland Browns became the Ravens before the 1996 season, with Washington losing two of the meetings in Landover, Md.
Attendance was 71,438 – the largest crowd in Ravens’ history.
Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell was hit hard by Terrell Suggs and intercepted on his third attempt, with Reed catching and returning the wobbly throw to the Ravens 45.
It took only five plays for Baltimore to convert the turnover into a touchdown. One play after Ray Rice broke two tackles for a 21-yard gain on third-and-10, Le’Ron McClain bulled up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead.
turned to Portis to improve their field position. But after an 11-yard gain on first down, Portis had the ball wrestled out of his arms by Reed. The ball bounced to the ground, and Reed carried it in for his 11th career touchdown.
Washington coach Jim Zorn challenged the call, hoping a video replay would show Portis was down before fumbling, but the call stood. It was Reed’s first fumble recovery for a TD since Oct. 10, 2004, against the Redskins at FedEx Field.
Suisham’s field-goal attempt early in the second quarter sailed wide right.
