NEW YORK (AP) – Comments on the Oakland Raiders by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):
OAKLAND RAIDERS (23, TIE)
Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 17): It will be interesting to see what Carson Palmer can do over whole season in Oakland.
Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 19): Carson Palmer had offseason to learn about offense and teammates, knowing, of course, he can always hand off to Darren McFadden. A little dose of defense, and Raiders can contend for playoff spot.
Bob Glauber (Newsday, 20): New GM Reggie McKenzie has brought new attitude. Let’s see if it finally translates into winning season.
Chris Berman (ESPN, 21): Everything is new for Silver & Black; anything is possible in this division.
John Lynch (Fox Sports, 23): I believe the Raiders found winner in new head coach Dennis Allen. RB Darren McFadden’s return helps, but so much rests on QB Carson Palmer’s play. Is he Pro Bowler we saw early in career in Cincy or guy who threw 16 picks in 10 games as a Raider last year?
Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 24): More discipline equals more wins with Dennis Allen – eventually! Headed in right direction.
Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 25): Darren McFadden is superstar and Carson Palmer has time to learn new offense.
Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 25): Raiders haven’t had a winning season since 2002 and had roster purge this spring to get under salary cap. At least nine players who contributed significant playing time last season are gone.
Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 26): Not sure if Darren McFadden can stay healthy. Not sure if Carson Palmer is QB he used to be.
Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 26): It’s all up to Darren McFadden, but he’s injury waiting to happen.
Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 26): First full season post-Al Davis may be rough one with Raiders unable to upgrade roster much because of salary-cap restraints.
Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 29): Late Al Davis wouldn’t recognize this overhauled roster.
