BEREA, Ohio (AP) -Browns coach Eric Mangini says running back Jamal Lewis did not complain of concussion-like symptoms until one day after what turned out to be his final game.
Lewis was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, effectively ending his NFL career with five games left. Lewis had planned to retire after this season, but the 30-year-old was forced out prematurely after sustaining an unspecified head injury on Sunday in Cincinnati.
Mangini says the decision to place Lewis on IR came after consulting with team doctors. The first-year coach said the team began immediate testing after Lewis informed them of his injury, but had not complained about symptoms during the 16-7 loss to the Bengals.
Browns quarterback Derek Anderson says Lewis told him he visited a specialist on Tuesday.
