MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Toby Gerhart’s impact as a rookie in Minnesota has been minimal for a second-round draft pick and Heisman Trophy runner-up.
That’s what happens when an All-Pro like Adrian Peterson is in the backfield. When Peterson went down with a sprained ankle in Sunday’s game at Washington, Gerhart was given his first significant action. He carried the ball 22 times for 76 yards and a touchdown, the first of his career.
Gerhart could get more time this week, with Peterson’s status uncertain for Sunday’s game against Buffalo.
Vikings players say they have confidence in Gerhart’s ability to fill in if he’s needed. Gerhart says he found “a little rhythm” against the Redskins and grew more comfortable as the game went on.
