Adrian Peterson injured his right ankle in the first half of the Minnesota Vikings’ 17-13 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday and did not return.
Peterson said his ankle “got rolled up” when he was tackled on a 1-yard carry late in the second quarter. Neither Peterson nor interim coach Leslie Frazier would speculate on the running back’s prospects for next week’s game against Buffalo.
“We’ll know a little more about Adrian tomorrow,” Frazier said, “after they do whatever examinations they have to.”
The Vikings initially said Peterson was probable to return to the game, then downgraded him to questionable. He had his ankle taped, then stood on the sideline testing it, stepping gingerly at times and attempting short sprints.
“It started to throb a little bit,” Peterson said. “I was trying to keep it loose, jogging, but it really didn’t help out.”
Peterson went over the 1,000-yard mark for the fourth time in his four-year NFL career before he was hurt. He finished with six carries for 36 yards, including a 5-run touchdown run on Minnesota’s opening drive.
Vikings defensive lineman Ray Edwards also left in the first half with a left leg injury. He will also be evaluated Monday.
Redskins cornerback Carlos Rogers injured his left hamstring in the second half.
Also, San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson injured a calf in the first quarter of the game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Jackson was playing for the first time this season after a protracted holdout. He had served a three-game suspension imposed by the team because of the holdout. He did not have a catch before the injury.
Baltimore fullback Le’Ron McClain was helped from the field in the second quarter against Tampa Bay after spraining his left ankle. Safety Dawan Landry left in the third quarter with a concussion. Tampa Bay safety Cody Grimm hurt his left ankle and was carted off the field during the second quarter. Tampa Bay G Davin Joseph hurt his foot in the first quarter and did not return. Ravens left tackle Michael Oher sprained his right knee.
Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski completed 17 of 32 passes for 252 yards and reinjured his shoulder on his final throw of the game in Oakland’s 33-17 loss.
Bills defensive end Dwan Edwards is out indefinitely after hurting his left hamstring early in a 19-16 overtime loss to Pittsburgh.
Without going into detail, coach Chan Gailey assessed Edwards’ status by saying: “Not good. We’ll lose him for a while.”
Edwards was hurt on the Steelers’ opening possession, when he fell awkwardly while being pushed from behind by center Maurkice Pouncey. Edwards lay on the field clutching his left leg before being helped up by trainers. He limped to the sideline before being loaded into a cart and driven to the locker room.
Also in the game, defensive end Nick Eason did not return after spraining his right knee late in the fourth quarter following a 2-yard run by Fred Jackson. Cornerback Bryant McFadden did not return after leaving the game early in the second half with a right hamstring injury. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said both players will be evaluated before he could determine the severity of their injuries
