PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Miami Dolphins activated running back Ricky Williams on Monday following a 1 1/2-year suspension, but he injured a shoulder during the second quarter in Pittsburgh after carrying six times for 15 yards.
Williams was reinstated by the NFL on Nov. 14. He began his comeback with the winless Dolphins last Monday with weightlifting and meetings with teammates. He participated in practices later in the week.
Williams came into the weather-delayed game against the Steelers with Miami facing a third-and-4 at their own 20 and no score late in the first quarter. He ran 5 yards for a first down, but was held to a combined one yard on his next two carries.
The 2002 NFL rushing champion gained nine yards on three more carries over two possessions before being taken to the locker room with the shoulder injury.
Williams has tested positive for marijuana at least four times since Miami acquired him in 2002. He rushed for 3,225 yards in the 2002-03 seasons after being traded to the Dolphins. He retired in 2004, but returned to the Dolphins in 2005, when he ran for 743 yards.
Until Monday, Williams had not played since gaining 108 yards against New England on Jan. 1, 2006, Miami’s final game of the 2005 season. He ran for 280 yards in his final two games that season.
To make room on the roster, the Dolphins waived running back Samkon Gado. The Dolphins claimed Gado off waivers from the Houston Texans in October.
