SUSSEX, Va. (AP) -Former NFL star Michael Vick is headed back to court on dogfighting charges.
Vick will appear Tuesday in Surry County Circuit Court to plead guilty to state dogfighting charges, a necessary step to make him eligible for early release from prison into a halfway house.
The 28-year-old Vick is serving a 23-month sentence for a federal dogfighting conviction. The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is scheduled for release in July 2009.
Vick will plead guilty to two felony counts – beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs and engaging in or promoting dogfighting.
Each felony is punishable by up to five years in prison, but a plea agreement calls for him to receive a suspended sentence and a year of probation.
