CHICAGO (AP) -Robbie Gould kicked three second-quarter field goals but the Chicago Bears still couldn’t find the end zone and trailed the Philadelphia Eagles 10-9 at the half Sunday night.
Donovan McNabb threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jason Avant and David Akers kicked a 25-yard field goal as the Eagles took a 10-0 lead after one quarter.
McNabb’s TD toss to Avant capped a 76-yard drive that featured his 21-yard pass to Brent Celek and two penalties on the Bears – a 15-yarder for a facemask penalty against McNabb and also an offside.
Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler, who threw five interceptions in the Bears’ previous game at San Francisco, came in with a league-high 17 interceptions. He nearly threw another one on the Bears’ first possession, but Philly’s Quintin Mikell couldn’t hang on to the ball.
Chicago’s Kahlil Bell, just elevated from the practice squad on Friday when Garrett Wolfe was put on IR, broke off a 72-yard run to the Eagles 10 in the second quarter.
But the drive stalled when Cutler threw incomplete into coverage in the end zone on third down. Gould’s second field goal of the quarter, from 28 yards, made it 10-6. Gould also hit from 45 yards, right after Cutler overthrew Greg Olsen and then Devin Hester as they broke for the end zone.
McNabb, a former Chicago high school star who once played a title game at Soldier Field, was 9 for 15 under a heavy rush and was intercepted once.
In the second quarter, the Eagles’ DeSean Jackson fielded a punt and after some nice footwork broke loose on a 53-yard return to the Chicago 39. But on the very next play, Jackson fumbled after a catch. Charles Tillman stripped the ball and Anthony Adams recovered at the 33.
Michael Vick’s 34-yard run after a direct snap – his longest play since returning to the NFL – moved the ball to the Bears 32 on the first series of the game. Five plays later after the drive stalled, Akers kicked his field goal.
