KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Priest Holmes' return to the Kansas City Chiefs could be a short one.
The 34-year-old running back was meeting with club officials Wednesday following his unexpected return to the team after being sidelined for nearly two years.
A team official told The Associated Press there was a possibility the former Pro Bowl player could announce later in the day whether he will retire. The official asked not to be identified because Holmes' plans were uncertain.
If Holmes does retire, it would leave the Chiefs (4-6) woefully short at running back. Holmes had started the last two games in place of Larry Johnson, who is out for a third straight week after huring his foot Nov. 4. Holmes left the game at Indianapolis briefly last week but returned.
``Priest got dinged. ... We're evaluating him, and we'll see where it's at tomorrow,'' coach Herm Edwards said.
Holmes returned to football this year after being out for almost two years with head and neck injuries he sustained in a game at San Diego in October 2005. Holmes started the last two games in place of Johnson.
If Holmes cannot play, rookie Kolby Smith would be about all the Chiefs have left to play against Oakland this week. Smith, a fifth-round pick, has carried 10 times for 19 yards. Holmes had 55 yards rushing against the Colts as the Chiefs lost their third in a row.
He has carried 46 times for 137 yards and has caught five passes for 17 yards.
