FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -New York Jets running back-kick returner Leon Washington expects to fully recover from his broken right leg, and is “very optimistic” about working out with the team when it begins offseason programs in March.
Washington made his first public appearance at the team’s facility Thursday since suffering a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula last month in a game at Oakland. He had a rod inserted into the tibia, and Washington said he’s “98-99 percent” past any threat of infection to the leg.
Doctors told him the injury takes anywhere from six to 12 months to heal.
Washington also said he has no regrets about playing out the final year of his rookie contract, rather than accept the team’s offer in the offseason.
