PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Sean McDermott came up with a game plan to beat Peyton Manning that would’ve made his old mentor proud.
McDermott mixed up coverages, changed fronts, blitzed and did everything possible to try to confuse Manning. It worked. McDermott’s defense was a big reason the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Indianapolis Colts 26-24 on Sunday.
Jim Johnson couldn’t do that. The longtime Eagles defensive coordinator was 0-3 against Manning.
McDermott, who replaced Johnson after the assistant passed away following a battle with cancer in 2009, had been under scrutiny as Philadelphia’s defense struggled. His unit’s performance against the Colts should silence McDermott’s critics for at least one week.
